Males vs. Female

Average Height, Weight and General Appearance

A big difference between male and female Golden Retrievers is their appearance. As with most animals, the males tend to be larger than the females. A full-grown male Golden Retriever can weigh anywhere between 65 and 75 pounds, while a full-grown female will be around 55 to 65 pounds.

Male and female also differ in height. Adult male Goldens are usually between 23 and 24 inches tall at their shoulders. Adult females are around 21 and 22 inches tall at their shoulders.

There are other visible differences between male and female Golden Retrievers. Male Goldens usually have thicker hair, with a prominent tuft of long hair accumulated in the neck and chest region that most people know as a “mane.”

Females’ hair is thinner and may appear to be more feathered. Both male and female Goldens need regular brushing and grooming but males may require that more frequently.

Male golden retrievers also tend to have broader heads and snouts, while females have a narrower head and a skinnier snout. Typically, females are slenderer, and males usually have a stockier appearance.

Personality

Male and female Golden Retrievers share many of the same personalities as their friendliness and gentle nature.

Some believe that male Goldens tend to be far more attached to their owners, while female Goldens are more independent. Males might be more likely to stay glued at your hip, and eager to please you. Females do get attached and want to please you, although they might not be as clingy as a male.

Females are still affectionate, but they just might express their affection differently than males would. Female Goldens still desire their owner’s company and want to be near to them, but they might like to maintain a level of independence at the same time.

Some think males are more stubborn than females. But we believe every puppy has their own personality rather than noticing that by gender.

Some say females might be more independent and territorial, while males can be more affectionate and eager to please you.

Energy

Both male and females are very active and energetic due to their breed. Some say males tend to be more puppy-like than females for a longer period. Both genders need regular exercising and active lifestyles to be at their full health potential. Remember that destructive behaviors or mood issues can easily be solved by a good walk around or playing catch or going for a run! Male Golden Retrievers need consistent, positive reinforcement training from day one. Give your male Golden Retriever at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. Females also require positive reinforcement training methods. Start training and socializing your girl Golden from day one.

Which is better for a Family?

Golden Retrievers make great family pets, and there are a few things about females and males that may make you choose one over the other for your household.

Female Goldens are sometimes reported to have calmer dispositions, so they may be a better fit for families that include children or seniors. Female Goldens are believed to be more careful and observant around small children, and male Goldens might be more carefree and playful which could result in more accidents like knocking down a child or senior in the house if they are hyper or even just for their larger size. We truly believe it all comes down to obedience and how much training and patience you give either gender.

Both genders are extremely friendly, but this energetic spirit could cause accidental injury to certain family members who cannot handle the size of a medium-to-large breed dog, that’s why training is a must from day one.

Goldens are an ideal match for young couples who love a lot of activity. Whether it’s hiking, walking, or water sports, and both female and male love these activits..

While they’re both great dogs, male and female Golden Retrievers definitely have their differences. If you want a devoted, high-energy dog that is bigger, opt for a male Golden Retriever. If you prefer a more independent and calmer dog, a girl is ideal for you. Whatever sex you pick, you can rest assured that you’ll enjoy years of love and loyalty from your Golden!
